The company is betting that it is, and can back it up with real stats... Makers always state the best possible performance for their vehicles, so what happens in actual day to day driving? Most gasoline cars use fuel at the rate of 20-30 mpg, which equates to about 100 kWh per 60 miles or 100 km in the US, but in the UK, where smaller cars are the norm, we are looking at 68-80 kWh per 60 miles or 100 km. Because the Tesla Model S has a 95 kWh battery pack, roughly, we can state that will travel around 60miles / 100km per 29kwh, which is almost 4 times better than the best gasoline car, if the gasoline per 60 miles or 100km is converted to kWh per 60miles / 100 km. 21kwh per 60 miles / 100 km is equivalent to 63g per mile or 105g CO2 per km, assuming that electricity generation has a production of 500g CO2 per kWh... Now the official stats are that each person will only travel around 18 miles or 30 km to work each day, so that an electric car should more than cope with the day to day needs of most people. 8.3% of people apparently travel more than 18 miles or 30km, so if they fall within half range, or 90 miles or 150 km, they should be ok too... Most people would agree that gasoline cars have reached the pinnacle of fuel efficiency. Because considering all the improvements that have been made in gasoline engines over the last 100 years, we are only just nudging 30 mpg for our latest fuel sippers... But electric cars have much further that they can go, pardon the pun, in efficiency and performance...
