Alternative Energy Sources? How is Energy Created?

America.gov Tomorrows Transportation...

Ignore the 3 wheeled Aptera, the company is gone...Ditto with the EVX-1 Attack...

We are looking forward towards alternative energy sources. And many countries are signing the Kyoto Treaty..

Greenhouse gases are of major interest throughout the world...

Alternative or renewable energy sources can help to reduce the pollutants that are byproducts of energy use.

Using alternative energy saves the natural resources that we need while saving pollutants from being expended.

The types of alternative sources are...

Wind Power

Wind energy uses wind to drive wind turbines.

Turbines convert wind into electrical power using a generator.

Wind towers are built into wind farms...

And electricity is created in the wind farms to power electrical networks, and small personal turbines are used for generating electricity to homes.

Good

* Wind power is pollution free... * Wind power is renewable * Farming and animal land use produces food and biofuels.

Bad

* Wind power is not constant. * Large wind farms look unnatural and techno.

Solar Power...

Solar energy is converted to electricity in solar cells or by solar heat turbines or thermal farms...

It is also converted into electricity.

Also solar energy can be used for passive heating, eg a room...

Good

* Solar power is renewable as long as the Sun burns... * No pollution * Electricity generated can be used for any purpose...

Bad

* No sunlight, NO electricity... * Solar power stations are expensive...

Geothermal Energy

This is produced in certain areas by using the heat underground to heat a fluid which is then used to power steam turbines.

Good

* It produces no pollution.... * Geothermal power plants look better than wind farms...

Bad

* Pollutants can be produced if not done right... * Hazardous byproducts can be released by drilling * Geothermal sites are prone to running out of steam.

Hydroelectric EnergyElectricity is generated by water flowing through a large generator turbine, this water can come from a dam or river that has sufficient energy to drive the blades...

Also the turbine can be driven by electricity like a pump to correct power factor, which saves electricity for the grid to use later...

Good

* Water can be stored above the turbine, in a dam or lake, and released according to network demand. * As long as water is available, electricity can be generated to meet demand... * No pollution * Water can be reused.

Bad

* Dams are very expensive... * There must be sufficient water available...
