The major auto makers have been working on hybrid electric cars and the environment effects to soften the blow of both these concerns -

Unfortunately, Hybrid Cars are not zero emission like an electric car.

They do have reduced fuel consumption, and in many cases have reduced CO2 output quite dramatically...

Basically a hybrid car works by using some fuel to charge an internal battery, and giving either a boost to fuel usage via an electric motor, or boosts performance of the car by an electric assist or both...

You may already have experienced a hybrid at some point, because most electric trains have been hybrids or diesel electric for years, because of increased efficiency while many cities have hybrid diesel electric buses.

You may wonder why the car makers have not embraced hybrid gasoline or hybrid electric cars?

The Prius from Toyota is a gasoline electric hybrid, whereas the BMW Vision is a diesel electric hybrid...

The outlay in dollar terms of electric compared to gasoline power is less than a quarter of the cost of gasoline only vehicles versus electric only vehicles...

So electric only vehicles, even though they use the grid, are much cheaper to operate, and produce less CO2 than gasoline cars or hybrid cars -

Therefore hybrid cars are a combination of the two with regard to their load on your pocket, and their global load on greenhouse emissions...

Many hybrids have an all electric range that allows you to drive with no CO2 output at all...

The advantages of hybrids are that they offer the option to plug in at home and recharge the batteries, shifting the CO2 load from your car's tailpipe output to the power station, which as stated can be a quarter or less compared to the burning of gasoline in your engine...

Other benefits include not having to fill up so often, you can charge at home, and you are reducing our reliance on foreign oil...

There should definitely be much more required from the manufacturers though - It should be mandatory to fit an electric motor because of the improvements in performance and MPG< MUCH better for the Environment!!!
